Thanks to everyone who wished me Happy Birthday--I'll try to log on later and respond to individual posts, but I am running ridiculously behind on the day as my cats used cat gravity to hold me hostage in bed until almost noon.

It's looking like the computer models are heading south on Dean, I really hope they are right, though I pity the poor Mexicans in the way. I'm not happy with the size of the cat carrier (medium sized dog carrier, I believe--it was left by the people who lived here before me) I have when it comes to two cats, but I'm thinking they'd be happier together than in separate ones and I really can't afford another one. Still if Dean takes a northern turn, I may be out hunting for one anyway.

FYI, as of last night, Petco on Bay Area had almost none -- they only had either huge or tiny. But PetSmart on Bay Area down by the mall still had a good selection of sizes.

I'm honestly not sure if I could fit the size I want in the car (and I do have separate ones if I need to). It looks like we'll be OK here anyway, thank goodness, but I really do need to measure the backseat of my car with the passenger seat pushed forward and figure out what I can get in that space. Sadly, the larger Galant has a lot less space to work with practically than the Civic did, as the back seats don't fold down.

If you have a local freecycle group, join it and put out a request for a carrier the size you need. We had to buy absolutely ENORMOUS ones for the flight from NL to here: the cats had to have 5" clearance between their heads and the top of the cage when standing. There might be other folks who've had to buy more carrier than is really useful than just for the occasional vet trip who might be glad to give one to a good home.

Pet carriers are frequently available at Goodwill for a lot less than pet stores charge. This doesn't help you at the moment (because I'm sure all the ones near you are cleaned out right now!), but if you do eventually want to pick up another medium-to-large carrier, that's a good place to start looking.
